Washington Monthly Ranks New College of Florida Among Top 10 Nationwide for Liberal Arts
New College was ranked No. 8 among the nation’s liberal arts colleges – and first among public liberal arts schools – in Washington Monthly magazine’s “2013 College Rankings” issue.
The magazine touts its methodology as being different from that of U.S. News and World Report. “We rate schools based on what they are doing for the country — on whether they’re improving social mobility, producing research, and promoting public service,” its editors said in a website posting accompanying the rankings.
(U.S. News and World Report ranked New College as the country’s sixth-best public liberal arts college for 2013.)
Washington Monthly noted that New College ranks second in the country for the percent of federal work-study funds spent on community service, and eighth for the percentage of graduates going to attain doctoral degrees. The eighth-place overall showing placed New College ahead of many notable colleges, including Reed College, Haverford College, Oberlin College and Williams College.
