Gov. Rick Scott plans to veto a 3 percent tuition increase for state universities and colleges when he signs the state’s $74.5 billion state budget Monday. … Michael Long, who served two terms as student body president at New College of Florida, said lawmakers took “a major step forward” in increasing overall funding for state universities in the new budget. However, Long, who served on the state Board of Governors that oversees the universities from 2011-12, said students have been “hit by 15 percent tuition increases” for the last five years. “I think it is important we achieve some stability with tuition, so I do support a rejection of the 3 percent increase,” Long said in an email reply.
