Have you read or heard about the public archaeology program that location material traces of a maroon community on the Manatee River? Starting in 2005, a group of researchers and community members were Looking for Angola. Want to know more of maroons, known in Florida as Black Seminoles or African Seminoles, and in an earlier era as escaped slaves? Interested in the latest technology used in archaeology to reconstruct past places? Both topics are being presented in a Florida Humanities Council program on Saturday September 10th, starting at 1 pm, at the Manatee County Central Library. The free, open-to-the-public presentation of the reconstruction of the early 1800s Black Seminole landscape of east Bradenton (by the Manatee Mineral Spring) will highlight the program featuring Vickie Oldham, of Looking for Angola, New College of Florida Professor Uzi Baram, and Dr. Edward Gonzalez-Tennant of Digital Heritage Interactive.
