Professor Kathryn Dungy Elected to Board of Tampa Bay History Center

New College of Florida is proud to announce that Assistant Professor of History Kathryn Dungy has been elected to the board of directors for the Tampa Bay History Center.

A member of the New College faculty since 2004, Dungy is an expert on Caribbean and Latin American history during the nineteenth century.  Her classes at New College explore the cultures of Latin America and the islands of the Caribbean from a variety of historical angles, including race, gender, economic conditions and issues of historiography.

Gordon Bauer, professor of psychology and chair of the Division of Social Sciences, noted that “Professor Dungy’s appointment to the Board of the Tampa Bay History Center extends the community outreach of New College.  It is an honor for both her and the College.”

Dungy holds a Ph.D. in Caribbean and Latin American History and a M.A. in American History from Duke University. She received her B.A. in History and Sociology from Spellman College in 1991.

In addition to her election to the Tampa Bay History Center board of directors, Dungy is also a member of the Association of Caribbean Historians and the American Historical Association.  She is also active in several after school and mentoring programs in the Sarasota-Bradenton area.

Established in 1986, the Tampa Bay History Center seeks to educate visitors about the important history that has shaped and continues to shape the greater Tampa Bay area. Through an academic partnership with the University of South Florida, the Center provides quality historical and educational services and programs to the region’s three million permanent residents and more than 15 million annual visitors. Additional educational partners for the Center include the Florida Studies Center of the University of South Florida, the Hillsborough County School District, Tampa/Hillsborough County Public Library System, University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College.
