New College's Juried Student Art Exhibition Presents Selection of Dynamic Works

Post Date and Author:

Dynamic works from New College of Florida’s students will be on display in the 2016 Juried Student Art Exhibition, opening Feb. 1 in the College’s Isermann Gallery and running through March 18.
The event, sponsored by New College’s Art Department and Division of Humanities, highlights the most impressive work of 19 New College students.
“This exhibition invites the public to view a glimpse at some of our strongest student work, carefully curated through a competitive jury process—about half of the work entered this year was selected,” said Kim Anderson, associate professor of art at New College.
The work was selected by this year’s juror, Christopher Jones, assistant curator of exhibitions at the Ringling Museum.  Jones will discuss his curatorial process and present awards at the exhibition reception, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the gallery.
With access to a wide range of academic influences, Anderson said, students at New College produce art with a sense of purpose and curiosity indicative of their larger academic pursuits.
“The work in this year’s exhibition demonstrates range with a return to figuration in painting and sculpture, new directions in abstraction, digital drawing, and an overall reverence for craft,” she said.
The New College student exhibitors are Elly Bovarnick, Kierra Boyd, Matthew Brickhouse, Eve Burns, Miriam Carson, Laura Costa, Katherine Cottrell, Shana Dickler, Danielle Dygart, Margaret Marie Florence, Zeyna Hadidi, Zoe Heuermann, Lauren Hight, Ava Howard, Alice Leavengood, Francisco Perez, Sara Sarmiento, Wesley Thorp and James Von Hollen.
Jones, this year’s juror, is assistant curator of exhibitions at The Ringling Museum of Art, where he manages the museum’s traveling exhibitions program, and oversees the photography and works on paper collection.
Since arriving at the Ringling in 2012, he has coordinated “Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898,” from the Brooklyn Museum, and “Intent to Deceive: Fakes and Forgeries in the Art World.” He has curated many exhibitions for the Ringling’s photography program, including Builder Levy’s “Appalachia USA,” “Unfamiliar Realities,” “In the Streets: Photographing Urban Spaces,” “Danny Lyon: The Bikeriders,” and “Witness to War,” for which he received the 2013 Outstanding New Professional award from the Florida Association of Museums.
Prior to the Ringling, Jones was assistant curator of prints of photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum, where he co-curated exhibitions such as “Altered Landscapes: Photography since the Sixties,” and “The New World’s Old World: Photographic Views of Ancient America.” He has also worked as an art collections manager for galleries and artists’ estates. He is currently a Ph.D candidate at the University of Florida in the history of photography, and received his master’s degree from the University of New Mexico in modern and contemporary art.
This event is sponsored by a generous donation from Art & Frame of Sarasota and is free and open to the public.
