New College Students Plan Projects for MLK Day

Post Date and Author:

Why are New College students and employees rounding up a whole lot of carrots, potatoes, celery, rice, corn, okra and kale?
They’re cooking soup for 100, to be served at Resurrection House in Sarasota at noon Monday, January 21. The meal is part of a weekend of service projects in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
New College alumni Nicholas Manting-Brewer and Erica Lindegren, volunteer coordinators with New College VISTA, are leading the effort as part of the national MLK Day of Service. “We felt like it was a great opportunity to get out in the community, lend a helping hand and show that New College cares,” Manting-Brewer said.
The schedule of events includes:

  • Delivering meals in Sarasota’s Newtown community, with Community Mobile Meals, 9 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, January 18
  • Working on projects in Palmetto, Bradenton and Ellenton, with Habitat for Humanity, 7 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturday, January 19
  • Cooking Soup for the Homeless, location TBA, 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, January 20
  • Distributing Soup at Resurrection House, Sarasota, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, January 21
  • Gardening at Orange Blossom Community Garden, Sarasota, 3:30 to 5 p.m., Monday, January 21
  • Participating in MLK Community Celebration in the Park, 3 to 6 p.m., Monday, January 21

More than two dozen students and staff are participating, and the group is recruiting more volunteers for the Saturday, Sunday and Monday activities. To participate, email the coordinators at [email protected].
