New College Offers First-Ever Summer Session

Post Date and Author:

For the first time in its history, New College of Florida is offering a summer session of classes that will explore both classic higher education themes and cutting-edge technologies, in classes taught by the College’s distinguished and expert faculty.
The classes are open to students who have completed their freshman year at New College or other colleges, as well as the community’s mature learners, who can take the classes with or without credit.
Dr. Stephen Miles, provost of New College, said the summer pilot program expands the College’s missions of both undergraduate education and service to the Sarasota and Bradenton communities.
“New College has been providing an exceptional education for students from across the country for more than 50 years,” Miles said. “Now we are giving our neighbors the same opportunity, the chance to learn from faculty members who have trained at some of the country’s leading universities.”
Miles said the summer session classes are aimed at college students home or visiting for the summer, retirees who have a thirst for knowledge, or people seeking new job skills or exploring career options.
New College will offer seven classes, in four- and six-week sessions:

  • 3D Modeling and 3D Printing – Asst. Professor Richard Herzog
  • Alternatives to Capitalism and Socialism – Assoc. Professor Sarah Hernandez
  • General Chemistry 1 – Assoc. Professor Suzanne Sherman
  • Introduction to American Government – Visiting Asst. Professor Richard Skinner
  • Introduction to Psychology – Asst. Professor Steven Graham
  • Marine Policy – Assoc. Professor Frank Alcock
  • Electronic Music in Code – Visiting Asst. Professor Mark Dancigers

Registration began April 15 and runs through June 7. Classes in both sessions begin on June 10. The four-week session ends on July 5 and the six-week session ends on July 19. Limited housing is available.
Non-degree seeking students can enroll in more than one course. Students from other colleges can receive transfer credit for the courses, but should check with their home institution to make sure the New College course can count toward their degrees.
