New College of Florida Named a ‘Top Producer of U.S. Fulbright Students’ for 2010-11

(October 27, 2010) — The Fulbright Program recently listed New College of Florida as a top producer of U.S. Fulbright students for 2010-11. New College has the 8th highest number of Fulbright scholars among bachelor’s institutions, according to a report in the October 29 print edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education. With seven awards, the College outranked Bowdoin, Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Scripps and Middlebury Colleges.

New College has produced 57 Fulbright students in the 50 years since its founding. And once again, New College has produced a higher proportion of Fulbright winners for its student population than virtually all other colleges and universities, including more per capita awards than Harvard, Stanford and Yale.

“New College’s emphasis on independent study and research enables students to develop their skills in conceiving a project and designing it in a logical, sequential manner,” said Suzanne Janney, special assistant to the president and senior member of the National Fellowship Team. “They are used to thinking ahead about the resources they will need to carry out a project and plotting a timetable for completion. This active approach serves them well not only in the Fulbright competition but also in competing for positions in the workplace and in graduate and professional schools.”

New College’s seven Fulbright winners for 2010-11 were Alice Abernathy of Naples, FL (Spain); Mary Barnes of Houston, TX (Indonesia); Corianne Etheredge of Beaverton, OR (South Korea); Taylor Kennedy of Albuquerque, NM (South Korea); Lauren White of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI (Germany); Hannah Woerner of Sarasota, FL (Germany); and Anna Osborne Hamilton of St. Augustine, FL (Mauritius).
