New College of Florida Assistant Professor of Economics Tarron Khemraj has joined the Economic Council of the Alliance for Change (AFC) in Guyana. Khemraj’s role on the council will be to serve as an advisor on global, Caribbean and domestic economic and policy issues.

Prior to joining the New College faculty in 2007, Khemraj served as an economist for the Bank of Guyana and as a lecturer at the University of Guyana. He is considered an expert on issues related to monetary policies and their influence on emerging and developing economies. In addition to teaching at New College, he also currently holds a position as a research associate at the Caribbean Center for Money and Finance, University of the West Indies.

Formed in 2005 by a coalition of former Parliament members who opposed the nearly universal rule and reported human rights’ abuses of Guyana’s ruling party, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), the Alliance for Change (AFC) is Guyana’s third largest political party and one of the nation’s leading opposition groups. In addition to addressing the human rights’ abuses of the PPP/C, the AFC has a platform aimed at addressing issues of underdevelopment and spurring economic growth in the country.
