NCF Community,

The safety of our students, faculty and staff is always our top priority. In consideration of the potential impacts from Hurricane Milton, the New College campus will be closed from Monday, October 7 through Friday, October 11 and will remain closed until the post-storm assessment of the campus is completed. For Monday, October 7, only critical and essential personnel are required to be on campus to assist with storm prep.

All curricular and extracurricular activities during this time are canceled for this week. That includes admissions events, intercollegiate athletics practices and games, and the Socratic Stage Dialogue Series event that was scheduled for October 8. There are no exceptions.

All campus amenities will be closed during this time including the Dining Hall, Mailroom, Library, Campus Bookstore, Rec Center, Mama Gs, waterfront activities, the batting cages, and the field adjacent to the batting cages.

Class Cancellation Information:

All classes are canceled from Monday,  October 7 through Friday, October 11. Faculty members will remain in contact with students via email regarding assignments if possible, and will work with students on additional accommodations as necessary for missed classroom time due to the closure. Next week’s Fall Break will take place as scheduled, meaning classes will resume Monday, October 21.

On-Campus Housing:

A MANDATORY EVACUATION WILL TAKE EFFECT BY NOON TOMORROW for students living on campus. It is STRONGLY recommended for all students living on the New College campus to leave as soon as possible. If you have already left campus it is HIGHLY ADVISED for you not to return to campus. Students should refer to their hurricane plans and take action accordingly if leaving the campus. For students who do not have someplace to go, Sudakoff Conference Center will be available as a shelter. Cots will be available and meals will be provided. Students planning to go to Sudakoff during the storm should bring any essential items including medicine, pillow and blanket, etc. This option is only available to NCF students. Additional local shelters will be available and we can assist with transportation to these locations.

Students who may need to stay at Sudakoff should email Vice President of Student Affairs Almeda Jacks at [email protected] as soon as possible in order to coordinate accommodations.

Please note: It is the responsibility of each student to communicate with their family about their plans for the storm. The College will not be sending communications directly to student family members or emergency contacts regarding the initiation of the campus closing.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Vice President of Student Affairs Almeda Jacks at [email protected]

Faculty and Staff Duties During the Storm:

All critical and essential staff should report to work on Monday, October 7. If circumstances prevent you from reporting to work please contact your Supervisor.

All essential personnel should ensure their work areas are secure, with doors locked upon departure. Prior to leaving campus on Monday, any electronics located in first-floor offices should be unplugged and placed in an elevated location. Please also keep these items as far from windows as possible to minimize the chances of water damage from storm surge intrusion or a broken window.

During the campus closure, non-critical or non-essential personnel should not come to campus. Only staff classified as critical and essential with responsibilities directly related to storm response, should be on campus starting October 8 and continuing until normal operations resume. If you are a non-critical or non-essential employee and must access the campus during the closure, please receive permission from your Supervisor and notify Campus Police before unlocking any buildings.

Essential personnel who can complete their duties remotely should consult with their supervisor on continuity of operations during the storm to determine what days and hours they should work. Non-essential personnel will receive paid administrative leave for the period the campus is closed. Critical and essential personnel will receive comp time for time worked during the storm. For additional information on what personnel are considered critical or essential, please visit https://www.ncf.edu/new-college-of-florida-hurricane-preparedness/. Faculty and staff with additional questions should direct them to their Supervisor.

Campus Safety:

As of now, the Campus Police will continue to be fully operational during the storm.

Additional updates will continue to be relayed via email, on NCF.edu, through NCF social media channels, and the Mighty Banyan Safe app.

Please be safe and thank you.
