SARASOTA, Fla. — Dr. David Rohrbacher has been appointed Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs for New College of Florida. The appointment is effective immediately.

Rohrbacher has been a Professor of Classics at New College for 25 years, and is currently co-director of the Homer’s Odyssey First Year Experience course. A distinguished teacher (the winner of a 2009 Excellence in College Teaching Award from the American Philological Association) and an accomplished scholar, Rohrbacher is the author of The Historians of Late Antiquity (Routledge 2002), The Play of Allusion in the Historia Augusta (Wisconsin 2016), and the revision, in three volumes, of the Loeb Historia Augusta (Harvard 2022). He holds a PhD in Classics from the University of Washington.

“David is the perfect fit to guide our academic divisions as we implement the Logos and Techne Core Curriculum and expand our academic offerings,” said New College President Richard Corcoran. “His wealth of experience within our academic program, the respect he commands among his peers, and his unwavering devotion to New College and our students have prepared him to take on this new role.”

“I am grateful to President Corcoran for the opportunity to serve the College as Provost,” Rohrbacher said, “and I look forward to working with him and my faculty colleagues. I have always loved New College and I’m eager to help lead it into this new era.”

Prior to joining New College, Rohrbacher held teaching posts at the University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, and University of Tennessee.

Dr. David Rancourt, who has served as Interim Provost since February, will continue in the role of Vice President of Enrollment Management and also retain a position in the Office of the Provost as Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives. In both roles, Rancourt will focus on driving admissions and making New College a destination for high-achieving students.
