New College Provost Sam Savin Elected Geochemistry Fellow

New College of Florida Provost Sam Savin has been elected a Geochemistry Fellow by the Geochemical Society (GS) and the European Association for Geochemistry (EAG). In addition to his duties as provost at New College, Savin, who holds a doctorate in Geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology, also serves as the College’s vice president of academic affairs and teaches geochemistry.

GS/EAG Geochemistry Fellows are awarded annually to outstanding scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of geochemistry. The number of Fellows elected each year is limited to less than 1% of the membership of the combined societies and is typically significantly fewer. The new Fellows will be introduced and their certificates presented at the Goldschmidt Conference in Davos, Switzerland in June.

Prior to joining New College in July of 2006, Savin was the Jesse Earl Hyde Professor of Geological Sciences and served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. An isolated geological formation in Antarctica, “Savin Nunatak,” was named after Dr. Savin in 1965 by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN/US-ACAN). Savin is the author of a laboratory and exercise manual for undergraduate students in oceanography and has served as a member of the editorial boards of Annual Reviews of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Marine Micropaleontology, and Paleogeography, Paleoclimatology and Paleoecology.

The Geochemical Society is a nonprofit scientific society founded to encourage the application of chemistry to the solution of geological and cosmological problems. Membership is international and diverse in background, encompassing such fields as organic geochemistry, high and low-temperature geochemistry, petrology, meteoritics, fluid-rock interaction, and isotope geochemistry. The Geochemical Society is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Union of Geological Sciences, the Council of Scientific Society Presidents and is an allied society of the Geological Society of America.
