New College Professor Steve Miles Promoted

New College of Florida Associate Professor of Music, Stephen Miles, has been promoted to professor. Professor Miles joined the New College faculty in August of 1988 and teaches Experimental Music in Theory and Practice and Music Theory II, among other courses. He established the acclaimed New Music New College performing arts series which features contemporary music and compositions by leading local and national artists, as well as students and alums from New College.

He received his M.Mus. and D.M.A. degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his B.M. degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Professor Miles is active as a composer, performer and scholar. His music has been performed throughout the United States and he regularly presents papers at the Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts at the annual meetings of the Society of Composers. Known for his research on music as social process, Professor Miles has published in such journals as Perspectives of New Music, Music and the Arts in Action and College Music Symposium. Dr. Miles is the first faculty member in music to attain the rank of professor at New College.
