Eight New College of Florida Scholarship Recipients Honored at State Capitol
Members of the Florida Legislature took a brief respite from their ongoing and often heated debate over the budget on Thursday to recognize some of the state’s leading undergraduate students. In total, eight New College of Florida students were honored for their outstanding academic achievements during the past year as the Senate sponsored the chamber’s annual Academic Recognition Day for Undergraduates on Thursday, April 23.
On hand to receive the recognition for New College was Michael J. Dexter, a second-year student from Sarasota majoring in political science and biology, who is currently completing an internship in Tallahassee with the Collins Center for Public Policy, where he is working to develop public policy with the Council for a Sustainable Florida and the Century Commission. Dexter’s internship is part of State Representative Keith Fitzgerald’s Capitol Internship Program for New College students.
Dexter this spring was awarded a 2009 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship. These highly competitive national awards are given annually to academically talented college sophomores majoring in a discipline area related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA’s programs and mission.
Joining Dexter on this year’s Senatorial honor’s roll for New College were two 2009 Morris K. Udall Scholars and five 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholars. Those students included:

In addition to the students honored by the Senate on Thursday, New College officials recently learned that two more students, Melissa Jacobowitz of Royal Palm Beach, Florida and Georgia Junmei Kashnig of Champaign, Illinois, have been awarded Fulbright Fellowships for 2009-2010 and that four other students have been awarded French Government Teaching Assistantships. Those students are Anyelle DeLeon from Hollywood, Florida; Alexandra Rogers from Rock Hill, South Carolina; Scott Ross from Schwenksville, Pennsylvania; and Madison Sharko from Ft.
