Alejandra Ferreyros, a fourth-year student at New College of Florida, has won a competition to design a new logo for the Community Coalition on Homelessness (CCH) in Bradenton, Florida. Ferreyros was among several New College students who entered the competition, and the only one to make it to a group of finalists that also included ten students from Ringling College of Art and Design.  As the competition winner, Ferreyros was awarded a $500 prize.

In announcing the award winner on April 30, the Coalition stated, “This logo was chosen for a unique concept and really capturing the nature of CCH. Many of the logos considered were very good and we were really hard pressed to choose just one, but the ideas and concept here really stood out.” The agency provides information and referral, day resource services and rental assistance, as well as leadership and advocacy for issues related to homelessness in the Bradenton area. “I wanted the logo to appear hand drawn to emphasize the humanity of the Community Coalition on Homelessness,” said Ferreyros, who will graduate from New College this May with a concentration in art. “I wanted the logo be the opposite of sleek, cold and sterile. I believed that it should reflect the warmth and kindness of the organization, to make whoever sees it feel that the Coalition is a place that is inviting and helpful.”

Ferreyros is from Miami, where she attended the Design and Architecture Senior High School and studied graphic design. After taking a year off, she plans to apply to graduate school to study art. She is interested in illustration, fine art and graphic design.

“Alejandra has a unique design sensibility that can be seen in her solo thesis exhibition currently installed in our Isermann Gallery,” commented Kim Anderson, assistant professor of art at New College. “She is often solicited by her peers to design posters and flyers for campus events.  That she was recognized with this award is further evidence of her talents.”

Ferreyros’ artwork is currently on display at Art Center of Sarasota, which is hosting a New College Senior Thesis Art Exhibition through July 3. The exhibition showcases a wide variety of works, including sculpture, paintings, drawings, prints, installation, video and performance art.  Other participating artists from New College include: Jessica Borusky, Christine Doromoy, Ian Gray, Mia Johnson, Angela Kramer, Misha Wyllie, Persephone Thorn-Hauswirth, Kim Vorperian and Rachel Warzesky.
