New Topics New College Opens October 20 with New College Alumna Inge Fryklund
Additional programs address U.S. competitiveness in high-tech world, future of American newspaper, advances in cardiovascular disease and climate and energy innovations
New Topics New College, a community discussion series addressing relevant topics of our time, will present the first of five programs on October 20 with a talk on “Establishing Democracy in the World’s Trouble Spots” featuring rule of law advisor, Inge Fryklund.
The New College alumna, who has recently returned from investigating election fraud in the Afghan presidential election, will speak to the challenges and opportunities of establishing democratic processes in Kosovo, Tajikistan, Iraq and Afghanistan, and offer her own analysis and prognosis on U.S. policies in those countries.
Additional programs for 2009-2010 will address U.S. competitiveness in a high-tech world, the future of the American newspaper, advances in cardiovascular disease, and climate and energy innovations.
Guest speakers include: Dr. Robert D. Atkinson, founder and president of Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (Nov 3); Dr. Robert A. Phillips, director, Heart and Vascular Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center (Jan 12); David Lipsey, managing director, media & entertainment, FTI Consulting; Andrew Barnes, former chair and chief executive, St. Pete Times and chair emeritus, Poynter Institute; Mike Connelly (Feb 9), executive editor, Herald-Tribune; Fred Bennett, EVP and CFO, Lykes Brothers; Nick Gladding, attorney, Ruden McClosky and commissioner, Florida Energy and Climate Commission; Mary Anne Bowie, president, Bowie Urban Planners; and Frank Alcock (March 2), associate professor of political science and director, Environmental Studies Program, New College of Florida. Atkinson, Phillips and Lipsey are New College alumni.
All five programs take place at on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm at the Mildred Sainer Music & Arts Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road on the New College campus. Series tickets are $65 and individual lectures are $15, with net proceeds benefiting scholarships and other resources for New College students. New Topics New College is presented by New College of Florida and New College Foundation, Inc. Each event will conclude with a dessert reception at which attendees will be able to meet the speakers, as well as New College faculty and students. Additional programs may be added during the year.
