New Oak Trees planted along College Drive and Dort Promenade
(March 8, 2010) A trip down College Drive will now offer visitors respite from the Florida sun. Thirteen large southern shade oaks were planted along College Drive on February 23, as well as one along Dort Promenade. The addition of shade trees is a key component of the College’s developing Landscape Master Plan.
The trees were purchased from Cherry Lake Tree Farm in Groveland, Florida. New College alumnus Timothy Sallin (’00), who serves as the director of sales and marketing at Cherry Lake Tree Farm, was able to offer the College a reduced price on the trees which measure approximately 25′ at their crown.
In addition to the trees planted last week, the New College Foundation also received a donation of 100 live oaks from Guy Cox of South Coast Trees in Venice, Florida. These trees have not yet been planted and are currently stored in 25-gallon containers. New College Landscaping Coordinator Michael Williams noted that they will be used across Campus as part of the ongoing regenerative forest project.
