(December 22, 2010) — All Faiths Food Bank honored New College of Florida recently with an Award for Excellence in Community Service for contributing the most in personnel and service during the last year. New College Americorps VISTA coordinators Monica Tambay and James Birmingham received the award at the All Faiths Food Bank Volunteer Appreciation Lunch on December 9, 2010.

The mission of All Faiths Food Bank is to feed those in need, reduce food waste and educate the community about hunger and nutrition. Volunteers help sort, check and store food solicited from the community at the Food Bank’s 20,000 square-foot warehouse in Sarasota. Using food bank trucks, All Faiths Food Bank then distributes supplies to nonprofit agencies offering hunger relief in Sarasota and DeSoto counties.

Americorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. The New College Service Learning and Volunteer Office is staffed by two Americorps VISTA coordinators who connect Novo Collegians to the community by facilitating a wide array of service opportunities.
