New College of Florida to Announce Appointment of New President on Saturday, March 10
March 9, 2012 — The Board of Trustees for New College of Florida, the state honors college for the liberal arts and sciences located in Sarasota, Fla., is expected to announce the appointment of the College’s new president tomorrow morning (Saturday, March 10) at approximately 11 a.m. The announcement will be made during the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting, being held between 10-noon at Sainer Pavilion, located at 5313 Bay Shore Road in Sarasota. The meeting is open to the public.
The Board’s appointment will subsequently need to be ratified by the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) during their meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 22. The BOG has never failed to ratify a presidential candidate recommended by a member institution’s board of trustees.
The announcement of New College’s fifth president culminates a national search, which began in October 2011. The search was led by Archer-Martin Associates of Nantucket, Mass., in partnership with a Presidential Search Committee comprised of New College trustees, faculty, Foundation board members, students, alumnae/i and local business and community leaders.
The new president succeeds Dr. Gordon E. Michalson, Jr., who has served as president of New College since the College gained independence within the State University System of Florida in 2001. Michalson announced last summer that he was resigning his position effective July 1, 2012, in order to return to full-time teaching. At the time of his retirement, Michalson will have served as the chief administrative officer at New College for 16 of the past 20 years.
