New College Mourns the Passing of Professor Emeritus Lee Snyder
September 11, 2012 — It is with sadness that New College of Florida reports the passing of Lee Snyder, Professor Emeritus of History. Professor Snyder served on the New College faculty with great distinction from 1969 until his retirement in 2003.
A man of tremendous learning and wide-ranging interests, Professor Snyder was an intellectual historian who specialized in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Among his many accomplishments was the founding of New College’s Biennial Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies, which is recognized today as one of the leading conferences of its kind in the United States. His book, Macro History: A Theoretical Approach to Comparative World History, marked the culmination of his long career as a historian and stands as a testament to his scholarly passion.
In announcing Snyder’s passing to the New College community, Provost Steve Miles said, “Professor Snyder possessed unshakable faith in the vision of New College and worked tirelessly to advance the College’s mission through his work on major faculty committees. He was part of a generation of faculty who helped build the New College academic program and his contribution to our success was considerable.”
Professor Snyder is survived by his wife, Anne, and two adult children, Becky Snyder and Timothy Snyder. Cards may be sent to Anne Snyder at 941 46th St., Sarasota, FL, 34234.
A funeral service honoring Professor Snyder will be held on Saturday, September 15, at 3:00 pm, at the Crossroads Church, located at 4726 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. The family has indicated that everyone is welcome.
The College will hold a memorial service at a future date, still to be determined.
