‘New Scholars’ Takes You Around the World in a Day: Event Celebrates Student Research at New College of Florida
New Scholars, the annual year-end event celebrating undergraduate research at New College of Florida, takes you along on student projects about aspects of Antarctica, Brazil, China, Mexico, Germany and San Francisco, and into examinations of everything from agro-ecology to zoology and opera to hip-hop.
Among the presentations:
- Kayla Evens on her field work in Antarctica on phytoplankton communities
- Allya Yourish on the Jewish Museum of Berlin and Jewish history
- Cass Roberts on the differing motivations for bariatric surgery
- Miles Iton on the musicality of hip-hop
- Sabrina Mikes on alternative healthcare in Mexico
- Kyle Johnson on development, consumption and retail economy in China
These projects, and more than 30 others, will be the subject of 20-minute talks and slideshows from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19, at New College of Florida’s Sudakoff Conference Center.
The Sudakoff main lobby will feature a presentation of works by New College’s visual arts students, and the event also includes panel discussions and presentations by groups including the New College Quiz Bowl Team, the Black Box Theatre, and Aeolus, the College’s student-run academic journal.
New Scholars is supported by a generous gift from alumnus Robert Freedman, in honor of his late sociology professor, Dr. Penny Rosel.
A light lunch will be served at noon. The event is free and open to the public.
