New College makes New Music with rainfall data, student jams
When a half-dozen student musicians showed up at his office for a Tuesday night rehearsal, New College of Florida professor Mark Dancigers offered them cookies and gratitude.
“Welcome,” he said. “Thanks for being intrepid.”
Dancigers handed them maps showing eight weather stations in Florida. He told them he’d turned annual rainfall data into 16 minutes of low pulses and higher-pitched tones. This was their accompaniment.
He had them listen for a while.
