Urbanite highlights female playwrights in second Modern Works Festival
Five new plays by women, including a New College student, and a talk by a prominent playwright featured in Sarasota event
Urbanite Theatre will introduce audiences to four new plays, including one by a student at New College of Florida, during its second Modern Works Festival, which is focused on female artists.
What started as a two-week event last year, has been compressed into one week, Oct. 8-13 “to give it more of a festival feeling,” said Summer Dawn Wallace, who coordinates the festival for the theater she co-founded.
“This year, all the playwrights and the creative teams will be here at the same time, so everyone can get to know one another. Patrons can see a matinee of one play, grab a bite and come back and see a performance that’s entirely different,” she said.
The festival also will present an evening with playwright Lauren Yee, whose “In a Word,” was featured last season. (Pulitzer Prize-winner Martyna Majok was featured in the first festival.)
