New College Baseball Ends Season with Upset of 5th-Ranked Webber International
SARASOTA, Fla. – New College Baseball finishes 2023 campaign with doubleheader at No. 5 Webber International.
The Mighty Banyans fell 4-11 to No. 5 Webber in game one of the afternoon.
The Mighty Banyan offense struggled to capitalize on offense, failing to record a hit in game one. The Banyans were able to score 4 runs, showcasing their ability to capitalize on Webber’s mistakes.
Shawn Lara-Rosa had a good run on the mound in game one. Lara-Rosa came in and pitched 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit with a strikeout and no earned runs.
The Banyans responded in a big way in game two, upsetting No. 5 Webber in a 4-3 win.
After trailing 3-0 through five innings of play, the Banyans rallied to score 4 runs in the sixth inning.
Matthew Merk got the party started, doubling to deep center field to lead off the inning. Following a Brennan Peterson walk, Jesus Fortis continued the inning with a single, putting Merk on third and Peterson on second with one out.
Adrian Orozco drove in the Banyans first run, showcasing excellent plate discipline to drive in Matthew Merk from first base.
Aiden Apparicio walked in the next run, loading the bases for center fielder Landen Morrison.
Morrison delivered, recording the second double of the inning to score 2 runs and give New College the lead.
Anthony Griffith took the mound and executed, pitching a two inning save with one walk and one strikeout.
Landen Morrison led the Banyans offensively, recording two hits with a double and two RBI.
Matthew Merk had another impressive game, recording two hits in three plate appearances with a walk and one run scored.
Gabriel Rangel, Owen McKinley, and Anthony Griffith were huge on the mound for NCF allowing 3 runs combined and 6 strikeouts.
The Banyans win over Webber was the teams 20th win of the season, an impressive mark for New College in the teams first season.
