PTK is the premier honor society for high-achieving students in community and public two-year colleges throughout the United States and internationally. The annual PTK list “recognizes excellence in the development and support of dynamic and innovative pathways for community college transfer students,” and 171 colleges and universities were named this year. New College was only one of two State University System of Florida colleges on the list.

“Over the past few years, we have increasingly been seeing the value of attracting and enrolling transfer students, and we have been working to make New College a more transfer-friendly environment,” said Tim Binns, New College’s assistant director of transfer and international admissions. “We have implemented new admissions, enrollment and housing processes—developing more robust scholarships and support systems for transfer students. This recognition from PTK means we are making progress in our efforts to become a destination of choice for high-performing transfer students.”

The PTK Transfer Honor Roll spotlights four-year colleges and universities with proven outcomes for transfer success. To qualify, higher education institutions complete a “Transfer Profile” on PTK Connect, which lists information on admissions and recruitment practices, cost of attendance, campus life, and peer reviews.

The “Transfer Profile” is designed to reflect what the transfer student experience is like at the college, as well as the strategies the college is taking to support transfer students. The profile immediately gives the college a “transfer-friendliness rating,” and the top 25 percent highest-rated colleges are named to the Transfer Honor Roll.

“This award is so important because it is based on what students tell us they need from their transfer experience,” said Lynn Tincher-Ladner, Ph.D., the president and CEO of PTK. “We are honored to recognize the colleges and universities working exceptionally hard to create stronger pathways to bachelor’s degree completion for all students.”

Transfer students are a vital and dynamic student segment in higher education. Recent years have shown that an increasing number of students are participating in dual enrollment programs at their local two-year colleges, and opting to finish an associate of arts degree before transferring to another institution to finish a bachelor’s degree.

“The transfer path offers opportunities to those who may not have been ready or able to attend their target four-year college or university right out of high school, or who had never previously considered a four-year degree but are looking now,” Binns said. “We welcome these students—and their unique perspectives and academic talents—to New College.”
