- Named by U.S. News & World Report as the “Nation's No. 5 Ranked Public Liberal Arts College” in America’s Best Colleges, 2009 edition.
- Named a “best buy school” in the 2010 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges, which features 44 Best Buy Schools - 20 public and 24 private - in the country.
- Rated by Forbes.com as No. 3 in the nation among all public colleges and universities, 2008.
- Named one of the country’s best institutions for undergraduate education by The Princeton Review. The education services company featured the school in the new 2010 edition of its popular guidebook, “The Best 371 Colleges.”
- Recognized as the “Nation’s No. 2 Best Value in Public Higher Education” by The Princeton Review in 100 Best Value Colleges, 2009 edition.

Student Scholars- Garnered a record eight Fulbright Scholars for 2009-10. With 34 Fulbright awards within the last five years, New College maintains one of the highest per capita rates of success nationwide.
- Fulbright Scholarships were awarded to seven graduating seniors and one 2008 alumna: Evan Axelrod for research in biosafety in Norway; Adele Fournet to study female rock artists in Peru; Melissa Jacobowitz to study Jewish identity in post-Soviet Ukraine; Georgia Junmei Kashnig to conduct research on the Swiss-Tibetan community in Switzerland; Claire Michelsen ’08 for assessment of midwifery in Germany; MacKenzie Karp and Lee Ellen Reed for teaching English in Germany, and Adam Schafer for teaching English in Spain.
- Fulbright winner Melissa Jacobowitz received a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Enhancement Award for three to six months of intensive language study in Russian in addition to her Fulbright year in the Ukraine.
- French Government Teaching Assistantships for 2009-10 were awarded to four graduating seniors: Anyelle DeLeon and Alexandra Rogers in Grenoble, Scott Ross in Lille, and Madison Sharko in Bordeaux.
- Graduating senior Trevor McGuire received a National Science Foundation VIGRE fellowship to support his graduate program in mathematics at Louisiana State University.
- 2009 Morris K. Udall scholarships were awarded to two third-year students: Elizabeth Hamman for marine biology and Nancy Rose Spector for environmental science, policy and management.
- Second-year student Michael J. Dexter received a highly competitive 2009 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship in environmental policy.
- Graduating senior Erin Craig will participate in a New Kind of Science Summer School Program in Italy. The math major was one of 40 students worldwide invited to take part in the program.
- Kate Boeyen, a second-year student in Chinese language and literature, selected to participate in the “30/30” summer program in China sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and China’s Ministry of Education.
- Graduating senior Steven Garte-Wolf made a presentation at the American Anthropological Association and had an article published in the February 2009 issue of Anthropology News.
- Students Leo Ferretti and Kelly Baron elected as student members into The Explorers Club, due to their contributions to Amazon exploration.
- Two graduating seniors, Adele Fournet and Alejandro Castaño, had their musical compositions premiered at a public performance by the Sarasota Piano Quartet.
- Anthropology student Kacie Allen awarded a grant from The Time Sifters Archaeology Society for her paper on Tucker Hill Cemetery in Hernando County, Florida.
- Nathaniel Chandler, a graduating senior, won the 2009 Margaret L. Bates Award for Scholarship in Gender Studies for a math paper that he presented at a national conference.
- Graduating senior and art major Alejandro Ferreyros won a competition to design a new logo for Bradenton’s Community Coalition on Homelessness.
- Three students, Eliza Cameron, Loren Niurka Mora and Caitlin Petro, honored by Campus Police and College Administration for heroism in saving a fisherman from drowning in Sarasota Bay.
Faculty Honors- Associate Professor of Classics David Rohrbacher presented with the Award for Excellence in Collegiate Teaching from the American Philological Association (APA).
- Carrie Beneš, assistant professor of history, awarded the 2008-09 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Post-Doctoral Rome Prize by the American Academy in Rome.
- Sarah Hernandez, associate professor of sociology, awarded a 2008-09 Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Mexico.
- Gordon Bauer, professor of psychology and chair of the Division of Social Sciences, completed the third and final year of a research project relating to the sensory performance of the West Indian manatee.
- Mariana Sendova, professor of physics, awarded a $1.7 milllion grant from the U.S. Government to fund her research in nanoparticles, the largest research grant in the College's history.
- Sandra Gilchrist, professor of biology and director of the Pritzker Marine Biology Research Center, awarded a contract and grant from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program to fund outreach programs on campus involving local teachers, middle/high school students and New College students.
- Leymis Bolaños Wilmott, adjunct instructor of dance, presented with the Artistic Achievement Award at the Sarasota County Arts Council’s 10th Annual Awards Celebration.
- Amy Clore, associate professor of biology, featured in the summer 2008 edition of the Council on Undergraduate Research Quarterly highlighting her research with two former students.
- Meg Lowman, professor of biology and environmental studies and director of environmental initiatives, designated a Fulbright Specialist by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the U.S. State Department, and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. In 2009, Lowman also had a major article published in Science Magazine and was honored as an extraordinary woman explorer by Wings WorldQuest.
- Associate Professor of English Miriam Wallace had two books published: Revolutionary Subjects in the English Jacobin Novel, 1790-1805 (Bucknell University Press) and Enlightening Romanticism, Romancing the Enlightenment: British Fiction 1750-1830 (Ashgate).
- Visiting Assistant Professor of Medieval history, Thomas J.H. McCarthy, had a new book published: Music Scholasticism and Reform: Salien Germany, 1024-1125 (Manchester University Press).
Alumnae/i Achievements
- Alumnus William C. Dudley appointed chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. An economics major at New College, he earned a Ph.D. from U. Cal., Berkeley in 1982.
- Alumna Nancy McEldowney, a career diplomat, was named by President Obama to become Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. She graduated in 1981 with a degree in economics.
- Alumni John Wilke and Alexis Simendinger each received national journalism awards for their outstanding coverage of the U.S. Congress and White House, respectively.

Crist to the New College Board of Trustees. Her term runs from December 2008 to January 2010.
Institutional Awards- For the fifth year in a row, New College received the YMCA Oustanding Community Partner award for the Sarasota YMCA Achievers program. the College developed the program to prepare Black and Hispanic high school students for college.
- At the Twenty-Fourth Annual Admissions Advertising Awards, presented a gold medal by Admissions Marketing Report for New College Magazine (2008) and a merit award for the Admissions Brochure – New College of Florida: Our Stories.
- Mike Michalson, president of New College, elected to the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for a three-year term (2009-2012).
- Michalson also elected president of the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities (FACU) for 2008-09 and reappointed to the board of the LeRoy Collins Institute, a public think-tank bringing together top leaders in business, government and higher education.
- George Mitchell, senior computer support specialist, appointed vice president for membership relations of Florida Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (FACRAO).
- Director of Multicultural/Transfer Recruitment Sonia Wu and New College Trustee John Saputo awarded Freedom Awards by the Sarasota County NAACP. Wu, a New College alumna, was honored for Community Service, while Saputo was recognized for Business/Industry contributions.
